I am new to the site but am enjoying reading about other members experiences.
I have a XJ750 RH with a speedo that doesn't work. I live in New Zealand and the speedo face I have has a maximum speed of 200 kph.
If I buy a replacement gauge from e bay from a breakers in the U.S will the speedo only read to approx. 85 mph. What happens when I exceed this speed?
Also, if I change the face plate for the original one off the bike, will the speedo read correctly? Does the gearing come from the speedo drive in the wheel hub or from the drive gear within the clock itself?
If anyone can help, that would be great.

    Welcome aboard,

Gosh its a small world, I'm from Christchurch but have been here in OZ 4yrs :)

I'm quite sure that the gearing is all done at the speedo gearbox on the front wheel. you could even fit a honda speedo I think
Have you checked that your speedo cable is turning? (disconnect from speedo housing and rotate front wheel).

    Hi Champ,
Thanks for the reply. Yes the cable is turning but the plastic gear behind the speedo clock face has been worn away. This resulted in a speedo that worked but an odometer and trip meter that doesn't. I removed the speedo clock mechanism but was unable to get replacement parts. Checked on e bay for a complete gauge unit . Found one available but it is from a bike in the U.S. I am hoping that it can just be fitted but was hoping to check compatibility before purchasing.
    Regards,
    Pete

Someone else may yet pipe in to confirm but I'd be quite confident that the speedos are all much the same. Its just that the markings for mph would be at a slightly different position than kph to suit the actual reading coming from the cable.

Also if you exceed the rating (speed) on the gauge I'd assume that the needle'd just run out further or stop.
