I changed my grips last fall and a piece of rod about 10" long
    and 3/4" diameter fell out.
I put it back in and put the new grip on.
I saw a post about handlebar weights, and was wondering if thats what it is?
What is the purpose of them?
Is there also one in the other side that didn't fall out?
    Thanks.
    Ron.

thats probably what it's supposed to be, it's to stop vibration in the grips
something that big and loose might do more harm than good
the other side? don't know but they usually do both sides

The idea of having Handlebar Weights is to suppress vibration in the Bars which studies show lead to Fatigue.

Riders will load-up Handlebars with all sorts of stuff to make them quit "Buzzin' while ridin'".

One of the more clever approaches I've seen is loading the whole bar.

I've seen a set of Bars loaded-up with Bird-shot mixed in Plaster of Paris.
Cork one end of the Bars.
Mix Bird-shot ... (Or fish-tank stone) into Plaster of Paris mixed with a quarter of a cup extra water.

    Fill 'er up!
    Let sit 24-hours.
    Badda-Bing, ... Badda-Boom.

Another idea I have heard is to fill them up with silicone sealer - the sort you use on windows or in the bathroom fixtures. When it sets, the silicone should absorb vibration. I imagine it would be useful for the dirtbike riders. The thumper bikes with the 650cc single engines would probably vibrate more than our 4 cylinders. It is a big piston on a 650 single.

OK I know this is an old thread but I have a slight buzz at highway speeds which produces numb hands. I am ready to "fill up" these handlebars with something.

1st Fitz and others have mentioned that the "stock bars" has some heavy metallic based filling in the handlebars already. Mine do not, does this mean my handlebars are not the stock bars (for my '82 maxim 650)?? I could just re-purchase the stock bars because I like stock stuff and get the vibration control that way.

2nd if the stock bars for my bike did not have any vibration control filling then I would like to fill them up with something. Led shot mixed with plaster of paris? (what size shot, very wet mixture?, and is there a technique for making sure you fill the bars up completely - the buckhorn bars seem like it might make that difficult and you will get air pockets.

3rd anyone ever tried the liquid bar snake stuff that Fitz mentioned?? I wish that stuff came in a tube that I could load into my grease gun and pump it into the hadlebars from the bottom up.

4th simple handlebar weights I would like to try but I want ones that don't stick out of the end of the bar so I can keep my normal grips - this seems like the easiest solution but the bar weights I see all stick out past the end of the handlebar necessitating a grip modification?

    anyone.....bueller.....

Just ordered some Vibranators - kind of expensive at $75 but I like the fact that they are completely concealed inside the tube of the bar (thus no grip modification necessary) and also I like that it keeps my bars hollow......once you fill up your bars with concrete or bar snake or even silicone......you are pretty much stuck with it.

Will post pictures and results after testing!
