    A) do the 'nuts' on the ends of the mirror rods spin independantly of the rods themselves?

    B) any ideas short of risking the brake fluid resevoir for removing the righ hand mirror rod?

ive sprayed an awful lot of liquid wrench on it to no avail....

    thanks

    A) Yes

    B) Are you aware that one of the mirrors has left hand threads (sorry, can't remember which one)

The left hand theaded nut is marked with a notch all around the locking nut.

LH thread is on the RH mirror. So, the one on the MC mount is LH.

I think the idea is to have the stalk loosen rather than breaking the mirror if you bump something.

    YAHOO.

got the right had mirror stalk off the bike and can now clean it up to match the left...

who would have thunk that it had left handed threads. reminds me of the time i was rebuilding a WWII GMC deuce and a half. i was attempting to remove the left hand wheels. i tried the 4-way, i went back into the shop and got a 2' breaker bar and socket. that wore me out so i went back in and got a 2' length of pipe. the guy i was working with gave me a sideways glance...

the pipe didnt work (yes i had soaked it with a can of s'ok a citrus based rust penetrant) so i went back in and cut new piece of pipe about 6' long. when i started walking out the guy asked where i was going with the pipe. i told him to take the da_ned lug nuts off. he, calm as an old guy sitting in a rocking chair with a pipe asked "are you turning them the right direction?" i about lost it and said, "i KNOW how to take lug nuts off." he replied "your thinking righty-tighty, lefty loosey arent you' and gave a chuckle. he said try them the other way...

sure enough they were so easy to take off the 'wrong way' that i could have almost done them by hand...

Reserecting this thread to see if someone can clarify. My right hand mirror needs to come off. I see 2 nuts here. I assume I only want to turn the top one - and I want to turn it clockwise (right) to loosen it? Lefty-tighty Right-loosey?

That's just one nut. The line in it is to let you know it is left hand so yes, righty-loosey for this one.

    +1.

"The line" (quite often just "notches" on the flats) is a universal indication of LH thread; you'll find these other places than just Yamaha mirror stalks.

Nah, you're not a dunce. A dunce is someone who refuses to learn something new every day.

If you don't learn from other peoples mistakes you'll have to make them all yourself.

REALLY? Sometimes they're just "nicks" in the corners of the flats and not a line all the way around... I've never seen a reverse-threaded nut that wasn't marked somehow.
