I have a 1983 XJ400 Maxim. I been working on the bike for a month. It starts instantly cold or hot no matter what the problem is the when I am riding it if I hold the throtle steady it kind of have like a hiccups. It seems to me like is electrical and happens only on the right cilinder.

What I have done in the past is clean the carburators ( twice - last night was the second time) I also changed the spark plug cables. Now the bike runs lean no matter what. I am able to make the spark plugs look light tan but that is the farest I can go.

When I just got the bike I found a electrical problem One of the cables that goes to the one of the coils had like a resistor. The resistor was so old that I could not see the ohms so I played with a couple and I ended up installing a 150 ohms and the bike starts. Also I notice that all of the sudden the neutral light stays on when I am in gear not as string as when I am in Neutral but stays on.

Please let me know what you think about this problem that is driving me crazy!!

    Thanks,

    Carlos

The neutral light sounds like a bad ground, which could be related to the running issue. I am far from an expert on electrical issues, some of these guys can tell you better than me.

I already check all the grounds and could not find anything.

    Not a resistor... it's a Diode......
Mine did that when the Diode was 1st missing, then again when a it fried (along with my reg/rect due to a bad ground).... Replaced it and all was well
I have some spares , I'll get the value for you...

As for the lean issue, vacuum leak?

WOW no wonder why I couldn't see the colors! HA HA!! Did the diode you replaced was round and made of ceramic? Thanks for your help I will definetly change it. Do you know what was the value of the diode?

When you say Vacuum what are you refering to?

    Thanks,

    for your help!

Had to run out so I grabbed my spares... I used 6 amp rectifier diodes, could probably get away fine with 4 amp, Got them at "The Source" (they took over all the Radio Shacks here)

Vacuum leak, thinking air leaking in around the carb boots getting more air in the mixture than you want....

I will check for leaks! Thanks for the info about the diode. I will change it tomorrow and let you know if that takes care of the hiccups.
