there are lots of them. Additionally, if you need a pick of something in particular, usually someone can supply them. Like say how to clean and wire the left control...

I would love to produce a video, I just lack a video camera and the skill to film any process I might be performing (and that skill is vital to a good video).

Well, if anyone does indeed decide to do a video, might I offer this suggestion: speed it up and use "Yakkety Sax" as a soundtrack. :p

I'll second the Yaddety Sax! God rest Benny Hill, may he rest in peace.
Of course that would only work if you did the process in time-laps.

You would be WRONG Mr. Robert! You do, in fact, need a video camera but you don't need any filming skills (or acting skills for that matter:)). I have a couple 'how to' DVD's for my other bike and I can assure you NO video or acting skills were used in the production of these videos! The production is LOUSY. And yet they are an invaluable tool for learning to do required maintenance. I got the set of 2 DVD's with the bike when I bought it and I think the cost to the PO was $240 (2 DVD set. 1 full, the other mostly blank)

Send me a pm and I will send you a copy of one of the CD's if you will promise to destroy it after you get a feel for the content. Just don't pass it on to anyone else. You will see how easy it can be. Do the work, explain what you're doing and let someone else point the camera at you and your work. Lighting? Audio? Who needs it!

You would be an absolute hero if you had someone video your efforts while performing maintenance on your bike. Basic troubleshooting would be great too. How to use an multi-meter to check voltage, wring out wiring etc.

I'd be willing to make some videos as I rebuild my XJ550, as long as no one minds that I use suggestions like "I find that Wrigley's gum holds a wheel nut on much better than Big League Chew."

In all seriousness, if someone wants to get me a list of what kind of videos they'd like and a good script (I have a Clymer manual if y'all just want me to go off that) I will try to make some. I have some basic equipment and software to put something together that should be good enough for our needs.

I have all the equipment Robert, if you would like to fly (or bike) out here to Florida and wrench on my bike to get her tuned up real good. I would film you no problem. Edit, lighting, music, it would all be good.

Frog and KT. That's the spirit!

Oil change. Seems simple but what about o-ring placement on the oil filter bolt. What about the friggin' intermediate no-touchy bolt.

Carb rebuild. Huge call for this one. I have a set of spare carbs off e-bay that I'd loan for this purpose. I'd even buy the repair parts and pay shipping both ways! (What a guy)

Re-build speedometer/tachometer gauges. BigFitz is the natural for this one!

    Clutch/brake cable replacement

Cleaning and troubleshooting the friggin' turn signals (Blinkers for Wizard!)

Prepping and painting - rattle can and air guns

I'm serious guys. This would be a huge tool for new owners. The videos for my Beemer are so bush league as far as production quality goes and yet they are priceless for their content.

As soon as I scrape together the funds to actually start the rebuild I'll film everything I can. I'll edit out the swearing and tool throwing though.

Wamaxim, you could come two. The more experts wrenching on my bike the better. Really, I'll film it all. We would either have the best videos for helping these people with their bikes, a AFV entry, or a tape that has audio that is just BLEEEEEEEEEEEP BLEP BLEEEEEPP... etc...

KT, As much as I'd love to visit St. Augustine I just couldn't leave beautiful cold and wet SW Washington State! Besides, duty calls! Gotta work! Would you like me to send you a segment of the DVD? PM me with your address if you would like to see it. The first segment only covers peeling the hide off the bike. If the dealer service requires removal/replacement of the uppers, lowers, and the "stingray", the part on top where the radio lives, you will be charged 2 1/2 hrs labor. At over $100/hr. Many folks remove all the plastic, bungie cord the turn signals and screw on some handlebar mirrors and ride 'em to the shop nekkid. The bike, not the rider. Saves nearly $300 on the repair bill. Worth buying and watching the DVD. An oil change/filter/ transmission and differential fluid change is $150. I did my 12K service for about $60 in fluids/parts. $90 buys a lot of gas! Watched the video/did the work. EASY! Cuz the dude demo'd the shortcuts like not having to remove the left side lower fairing. Just loosen the screws and bend the panel out of the way.

A tech session would be the IDEAL venue for recording a service because there would be participants to ask questions of the wrench bender. I'm thinking especially the carb rebuild.

Alrighty then, I'm encouraged! Now I just need to talk mommy into getting a camera that does video instead of just still pictures. She came home Saturday gushing on about a a digital SLR she wants...

Hit up the local pawn shops -- they're bound to have something relatively inexpensive. If you wanted to keep costs down, you could try scaring up an old VHS camcorder, like the one I've got sitting around here. The drawback is that the video would have to be digitized, requiring a capture card of some sort, where newer ones can just download the video onto the PC in question.

Next, you'll be wanting a director's chair, a megaphone, one of those clapper thingies...

    Take One! <SNAP>

I gots a Sony Super 8 with an S-video output from my brother so I just need to get a capture card that can play with it. Definitely cheaper than new... I need to bone up on how to get the capture card to work in my computer...

That's partly a function of the software, which should come with the card. How much the card costs will depend on the make and model of the card, what's packaged with it, etc. Off the top of my head I'd say you could expect to spend $50-100 for something that's halfway decent and not some neo-Taiwanese hack job made by SumDumFool.

Pinnacle is a brand that comes to mind; they have a kit where the adapter plugs into a USB port, but that model isn't the greatest (it's been known to drop frames). A number of the newer ATI and Nvidia cards actually have capture capability, but require the appropriate adapter cable, drivers and software to talk to it.

    Isn't technology wonderful?

She wants the Nikon D90. I think that, with the lens, is about one mortgage payment. Or getting her Passat fixed. I don't know about you but I think the money is better spent fixing needed things before buying a camera.

Wow! a lot of really good thoughts bouncing around. Looks like a lot of folk would like to post videos.
It might seem very basic to the veterans but to a new comer even an oil change can be a challange.

AB, she has seen them and, yes, they are cause for much annoyance (it seems only on her side however). I guess it would go a long way to assuage her anger. Mayhap it would be in my better interest long term to pony up for the camera. Besides, I'd get to use it... Hmmmm.....

FYI Robert regarding a digital camera. I had my eye on a Nikon D90 also (your wife has excellent albeit expensive tastes) until I did the sums and looked at it rationally about what I really needed in the way of a camera.

A fully fledged DSLR would be nice but they are bulky and most of us wouldn't use all the features that it boasts to have.

So, I hunted around, did some research and came up with the Canon G11. It's a small compact camera, 10mp with excellent low light capability, an articulated rear LCD scren that can pivot in any direction if required, a host of features that can be utilised and takes Standard Definition movies...and what really sold me with a small compact point and shoot camera...it has manual focussing if you want complete control over that function.

    Here's an article:

    http://www.dpreview.com/news/0908/09081908canong11.asp

I bought one - at around half the price of a D90. Most articles I've read seem to indicate that professional photographers would use something like this as a back-up camera. I have only just started using mine but I can say that it has all the usable features of a DSLR but can be put in my pocket in my leather jacket (XJ content now...!) and taken easily with me for that short or long Sunday ride.

Hey guys I am no expert but I am planning on doing a full rebuild on my bike.
I have a High deff video camera and a computer that can edit. I was also planning on doing so custom body work. If you guys can help explain things along the way I can film it.
