The boots between the rear of the carbs and the air box seem pretty pliable. Can they be pushed back into the air box? Carbs would go back on so much easier ('81 xj750 seca)...

They can, and that's one approach for removing and installing carbs, but it's still pretty tricky to get the boots back in place.

The old "yea you can push them back into the air box but wait 'till you try pulling them back out" trick  . Right after posting this question I thought about this (forethought and hindsight  ).
I went and read about your bike on your project page. While most of it went right over my head, I was REALLY impressed. Thanks...

Turn the front of the boots back on themselves, like some other rubber goods you may be familiar with. No need to push them into the air box. Put the carbs in and roll them on. Worked for me.

I just pulled them all out. When all done, I just put them back in. Attached to carbs first then the box. Doing 3 before 4 and 2 before 1. Used a long flat screw driver to push the box front out a little until the boots got fully seated. Then they keep it where it belongs.

Bushy, that's just plain gross! LOL

I do it the same way as KT.

(Hmmm, that didn't sound right based on Bushy's comparison... )
