it is not something you need to fix it is normal for the xj bikes to have this ticking of the valves. You can do valve clearence checks to be sure they are all in spec but the ticiking is not anything you need to worry about.

Ticking (a bit) is a good thing, totally quiet is not. XJ valves generally tighten up with wear, not get loose.

Valve clearance check is always a good idea if you have no solid evidence of when it was done last.

Other things to check: Camchain (never hurts to adjust.)

Exhaust gaskets at head; be sure all your headpipes are tight. A slight exhaust leak there will produce a ticking sound.

Also: Do you keep your bike on the sidestand or centerstand? There was a Yamaha dealer tech bulletin about ticking from bikes that had been on the sidestand. Some models had a modified cam cap to alleviate this non-critical issue; Yamaha was quick to point out that it was simply a customer satisfaction issue not a real mechanical problem.

In my experience with my xj, the ticking sound would happen at first start-up. I did deal with a constant ticking that was coming from a header pipe being a little lose. As long as the ticking only last for a few seconds after start-up that is normal.

If you are getting a ticking sound at operating temp either your vavles are too loose(very unlikely) or you have an exhaust leak. If it is not either of these then you must have a loose cam chain or an internal engine problem.

Possibly a spark plug boot not fully on. I had that problem with my car. The spark plug was not torqued all the way on, so it had come loose and the air pressure from the cylinder would blow the boot loose. It still looked as if the boot was on, but you could here a definitive ticking sound. It's worth a check :p

A quick forum search would have brought you to: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=14827.html Done on a 550, but all aircooled XJs are the same up top, YICS or not. Unless you've got an "X" this will work for you too.

Get some bike info in your sig and add your general location to your profile so we can better answer your questions.

First, try lifting the Chain off the Bridge between the two Cams.
That tells you if its slacked.

    Removing the slack?
Pop the side cover ... pull the plugs ... wrench-over the engine two turns in the normal direction and slow to a stop.

Quickly turn-over the Engine backward and listen for the Tensioner to "Click" when it takes-up the slack.

Yes. But it's different depending on which bike you have. PUT YOUR BIKE INFO in your signature so we dont have to ask (like now.)

What bike do you have? The adjustment procedure is different between various models, there are both an "automatic" and a "manual" adjuster.

The Pts Diagram shows the 82 Bike with an Auto Tensioner.
