I have read through chacal's very informative dissertation on interpreting VIN numbers but the shorty numbers confuse me somewhat.

Please let me have your interpretation of

    5K3001034

All I can make out is that it is a 1980 (number less than 101,000)....

    5K5-00##### - is a 1981 xj550. (Recheck the number to make sure it's not 5K5)

    do you have a picture?
any other info like engine size, etc...

I looked the vin up on my microfiche sevice data.

I can email this to you - just PM me.

It appears to be a 1981 XJ650, not sure of market region.

17-digit VIN: JYA5K3006BA001034 (or so my program thinks)

    Shaft drive, right?

    Thanks Guys,

I'm pretty sure it is a 1981 XJ650 Seca (shaft drive) - not sure about the region but sold here in South Africa. But the number is <101,000 so wouldn't that make it a 1980. And is it YCIS?

(Please ignore the battery cover - trying to find a replacement)

The serial number ranges are not consistent across the XJ models... 0xx,xxx was used for the first year production of a particular frame code (such as your 5K3). 1xx,xxx would be next year (but not always). Trying to make sense of Yamaha's VIN system can make your head hurt. Just ask Chacal.

Your bike is definitely an '81. This particular frame code was only in production for one year.

    Stereo sez:

which should be correct (I'm assuming he calculated the check digit correctly!).

    It is one of these:

    COUNTRY: OTHER

    MODEL NAME: XJ650
    STREET NAME: 1981 XJ650
    MODEL ID CODE: 5K3
    FRAME ID: 5K3
    SERIAL NUMBER STARTS AT: 000101
NOTES: styling and features the same as North American XJ650RJ Seca model, has dual front disc brakes and an oil cooler.

Can't see the oil cooler in the picture, though............ 8O

    Thanks Chacal,

So I can safely have 'XJ650RJ Seca' in my signature?

Did Yamaha have a colour code anywhere on the bike?

Sorry for the stupid Q's but this is stuff which my limited 'Search' abilities have not been able to find.

Technically, the R"J" is an '82 model year bike. What you have would be an XJ650R"H" ('81 model year) but they didn't use that designation (the "R") for the models outside the US in 1981.

"1981 XJ650 Euro" is probably more accurate.

Nice bike; if it's the same red as the '82 Canadian models, it's called "Cardinal Red" and chacal should be able to help you paint-wise.

    Thanks bigfitz52,

chacal agrees with you colour estimate (incredibly helpful fella) - is Cardinal Red; is this a metallic red? These pics will show the colour better bearing in mind the bike is not new!

I don't know if Cardinal Red is a metallic or not; once again chacal is your man (or someone else with a Cardinal red bike in original shape.)

Since that color scheme didn't get offered here in the States but the decal package IS available, I've been considering doing my 650 in a deeper, darker red pearl or metallic (or both) and using those stripes.

A question for you: Is the second color in the stripes SILVER or white? Photos never seem to get it right, I think it's supposed to be silver...

The second stripe is definitely silver. Is cahcal also the source for the decals? Need to order for after respray.

Shaun; There are a couple sets of side covers (and a couple "orphans") for Seca 650s floating around on eBay right now if you're looking for a new right side cover. Interesting that the Suzuki one jammed on there.

Thanks for the heads-up bigfitz52 - I am building a 'buy list' for chacal (he is holding a battery cover for me already). Prefer to deal with someone with such a great reputation rather than a 'misc' off ebay.

But if chacal can't supply I will go the ebay route.

This is getting OT so I will split the thread to something like 'Shaun's XJ650 Euro'.

    Merci, again 8)
