Starter Question 81 xj550 Maxim?

    hi all i had a problem with my 81 xj550 just recently where the only way it was starting was by push starting so i removed th starter and cleaned the brushes and they were filthy here is a link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrZZcpQmTTc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMnkPeergJY of the video i took of before and after but now when after i installed it will not even push start now i just hear the relays when i put th key in but when i go to push the start button i get nothing at all also can someone tell me it this is the starter solenoid link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38ZEDF45uYM so i can try the screwdriver bypass any and all help would be very appreciated thank you all you guys all rock here also how do i test starter off of the bike to see if its working thank you

    Yep that's the starter solenoid. Jump the two big posts. Makes lots of sparks!

    Make sure not to ground to the frame while jumping it.

    ok i tried the screwdriver and it just sparks but nothing at all happens

    It's very easy to reassemble the starter with the brush plate "out of phase" so the motor either doesn't turn (or turns backwards.) Take the starter back apart, and carefully realign the brush plate; there is a "notch" and a raised area to line up but they're not readily apparent.

    Do a forum search, I believe somebody posted a pic or two on this one a while back. Try searching for "starter turns backward"

    ok ill give that a shot today also is there a way to test the starter with if off the bike i have a connection that goes from battery to clips i know that they will have to be reversed obviously but will it work here is a image of the setup i want to use to test the starter

    ok i tested the starter using this battery jumper cable and it worked just fine here is the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvUcIMASglU i put back on my bike and still no start i then put a screwdriver on the solenoid and it started so i take it its a bad solenoid where can i get a new one from i hear that people are useing lawn mower atv ones please someone let me know whats best can i rebuild? thank you
