How do I replace clutch spring?

    I am probably not using the correct terminology, but I am trying to figure out how to replace a broken spring that returns the lever that the clutch cable pulls on. The spring on my project bike is broken, but the spring on my parts bike looks fine. I just cant figure out how to remove either and am afraid I may end up damaging something if I don't seek advice. For some reason I can't find anything in the Haynes manual about this. Thanks for any information you may be able to share. This is on a 1983 XJ750 Maxim.

    That spring simply sits around the shaft on top of the housing, one end engages in a little "pocket" cast into the housing and the other end hooks onto the lever.

    You would remove the circlip holding the lever to the shaft and carefully lift the lever off. (Might want to mark the losition of the lever on the shaft with a Sharpie or the like so it goes back on the same.) Give yourself some slack at the handlebar adjuster so it doesn't bind coming off/going on.

    So if the circlip were a kind of circular "m" such as the Mopar logo, I could grip the top, middle part of the "m" with some needle-nose pliers and slide it out that same direction?

    Yes. Actually, it's easier if you simply snag the tip of a small flat-bladed screwdriver in one "leg" or the other of the "m" and pry it (flat) off. Be sure to catch it!

    If you manage to distort it slightly with the prying, close it back up with the needlenose pliers. That type of circlip is commonly referred to as a "c-clip" or "e-ring."
