The PO of my Midnight painted some gold swirly do-dad accents on my original paint.

I want to clean that hand painted stuff off without damaging the excellent original paint.

    Any ideas?

I would start "colder" than that, DW is probably right about lacquer thinner but I would start with something milder.

Start with a product called "Tarminator" it's a "bug and tar remover" but it will also remove some types of paint. (auto parts store.)

    Then I would try "paint thinner" (mineral spirits) from the HW store;

Next would be denatured alcohol ("solvent" alcohol from the paint dept.) Gotta start being careful at this point.

Then lacquer thinner. It won't completely cut into the original paint but it WILL dull it, requiring it to be rubbed back out. Go easy.

Acetone will cut into the original paint.

i noticed that some wax/cleaner combos remove paint from
    rattle can jobs.
not very much at a time, but you definatly will not hurt the oem paint.
mothers wax will take off the hand paint but black magic will
make it all shiny so go with whatever mothers has in it.
nu-finish will take it off as well.
as a last resort before using a product ment to remove paint-oem and
hand- try some gas. my frient has some hand painted eagles on
his tank, and he's not very careful when he fuels.
the original paint is ok but the hand paint is melting away.

just be very careful not to let the gas stay on for more then a second
or two so you dont dull the clear coat.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

I already have some nu-finish, black magic, and mineral spirits at home.

Have to check into some denatured alcohol and Tarminator.

Laquer thinner might well work, but I'll probably just screw things up with my original paint by using it. I just don't trust me enough to use it to any extent.

Sounds like it may just take some kind of very mild cutting agent, several hours, and a goodly serving of careful elbow grease.
