thanks to mr craig of craigslist i found this

    "Yamaha $50obo(PARTS Or Project)FWB - $50"
Listed is a 82 yamaha 750 not running pick up only--- clear title on hand, $50 OBO for just bike $75 with title.... I dont have time to fix it----Mack xxx-xxx-xxxx--- FORT WALTON BEACH---

i called him up being that its hard to pass up anything mechanical like that for $50 running or not.... he didn't know if it was a maxim, virago, seca or what... but it's still there so i went to look at it.

there i found a '82 750 maxim... it had had the touring front end on it but he removed it for a "cruiser style single light" the seat is trashed... has a sissy bar and rear rack... but overall not a bad looking bike for $50. talked to him some more and he said he'd gotten it a little while back, rode it home and durring the ride it had a SERIOUS backfire and wouldn't start up again after that... in the middle of trying to figure out what was wrong life cought up with him and "it's got to go"

i should hopefuly be picking it up next week...

i'm going to check over it and see if i can't get it on the street fairly inexpensivly, i relay dig the old UJM style bikes not to mention it would be much more comfy to ride then my katana but for some reason I kind of expect it'll more then likely get parted out and goto fleabay, well see what happens though if it's stright forward inexpensive fix it would be a nice backup bike

The backfire is probably just dirty carbs but could be the timing chain.
You can get the seat recovered at an upholstery shop that does bike seats for about $50.00 and you should be in good shape.

Hi sounds like a good buy had similar problems with the 550 Maxim i had picked up not run for 3 years carbs will need a complete strip and clean also check the coils as they are prone to get a high resistance on one side as the previous owner said it started to back fire when he was riding it home i think the coil could be part of the problem. Pull the plugs and check the colour of the electrode to see if you have a very sooty plug gotta be worth a look. Hope this helps :D

hmm looking at more pics online i'm thinking it's a seca now... it has the digital dash gauges, 2 cut outs on the front fender, and the big black covers on the handel bar... unfortuanly i didn't pay much attention to the rear end and the tank was removed for engine work so i never saw that...

looked like this (bars gauges) [IMG]

that to me is a good thing... i like the seca a lot more then the maxim... so it'll give me more reason to figure out things :)

Try the Tradebit site for a pdf of the manual... think I saw one for the XJ while looking for something else this evening. If it's for your exact model, I couldn't say. Worth a look anyway.
