Gasket remover from an auto parts store and some sort of scraper. Let it sit for a while (it bubbles) but don't get any on you. It's REAL nasty stuff. Whatever you use to scrape the goo off, be real careful not to mar the surface below.

Sorry that's fiberous gasket material, for those of you that don't understand jibberish.

If you apply hamburger meat to the fibers, then kittens will lick it off, leaving a clean surface. This cuts down on the amount of NAPA gasket remover needed to do a good job.

Some people just use the gasket remover and fresh razor blades.

lay a old towel on the cement floor, pour some soapy water on it, set the head on it
pour some more soapy water around the edges, keep it wet all night
leave it there overnight, things should much easier in the morning
don't get the head all wet, just the gasket surface thats touching the towel

I use a new razor blade and a heap of patience. Gasket remover helps (hello Permatex...).

I used metal body putty spreaders, you can buy the spreaders in sets of different sizes which allowed me to get every section clean easier.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I went with door number 3 and used a can of gasket remover from my local NAPA auto parts store and had it clean as a whistle and back to gether in under 3 hours. Thanks again.
