Just replaced a prematurely dead battery(hopefully it's the battery and not the charging system)and had to buy the stock unsealed battery. I've never done anything with these. Is it necessary to have the electrolyte sensor in the battery? Also, where to I fit the breather hose?
Thanks for your time and responses.

It is not necessary to have the sensor in but your computer will flash the batt light at you nonstop. The breather hose is run staight down the left side of the battery. There is an opening in the battery box for the hose to exit through. Then there is another clip either on the frame or swingarm. I think it varies between models.

If its a sealed battery ... It won't have an over-flow port.

Check your alternator brushes; that might be at the heart of your battery problem.

Swap the bulb that's flashing with some other one that's burnt out.

That last thought is kinda fishy Rick, back yard kinda fix if ya know what I mean. Fix the symptom but not cause is just putting off the piper another day. I did laugh though, very creative. Reminds me of the exhaust noise cancelation unit (turned up stereo). Gotta hand it to you, I was giggling over that one. Keep them comming!

So I just open one of the white caps on top of the battery and put the breather hose in it? I'd like to get the sensor but I'm not sure if that'll be at the top of my list right now. If the problem really is the alternator, though all the symptoms were indicitive of the battery, how long can I expect this new battery to last before it goes out again?

No. No breather. Don't hook-up the hose. There is not a "Hose Hook-up Outlet" on a sealed battery.

IF the Alternator Brushes are good ... the battery should last for as long as it is rated to last.

There will be no place to plug-in the sensor; either. You'll nave to "Fool" the sensor ... or, creatively disable the light.
