What should I look for in a compression checker? I see them on ebay ranging in price from $6 to well over $100. I don't imagine I'll use it often but I figure I should check the compression before I do the carbs and valve shims.

    thanks,
    mikeg

I would spring for the one you can afford. Dead accuracy will cost and for what we are doing here, 2 psi either way isn't a big issue.
I own an Equus and a Sears homebrand, they both work just fine.

Get the valves in spec before you check the compression.

Do not buy the style of gauge that uses a rubber nozzle that you hold in the spark plug hole. It’s hard to get and keep a good seal while testing.

The one Rick mentioned is also commonly available at most Auto Parts stores for around the same price.

I've got a couple of them, paid $20 (years ago) $30 (recently) and they work fine. Lostboy is right though, you want a screw-in type.

"Utility grade" is all you need in this application.
