Im currently in the process of making a custom bike, and Ive decided I want a reliable IL4 with decent fuel economy and power, so ive chosen the early XJ600.

I was wondering if anyone could measure the engine for me if they have one? Ideally I need height, width, depth, sump depth, length and a quick note on were the engine mounts are if possible.

    Cheers

Supposedly, the dimensions are exactly the same as the 550 Seca and Maxim (which I don't have, so I can't measure).

Are you planning on putting this motor in something else??

Cool, So if anyone has a 550 maxim/seca they could measure that will do.

The engine is planned to go into a different frame alright.

If it works out i'll make a build thread for you guys, should be a laugh.

    Cheers

If you buy the bike I might be interested in any parts you remove - let me know.

Do you REALLY want to do it!! I think the bike is too good a roadster to chop.

Ok, I can measure roughly for you - I'll post them a bit later.

    Right,
Using the rear frame mounting as a datum: (All millimetres)
Looking at the r/h side of the engine, from the rear mounting to the front of the crankcase is 380, and from the same point to the leading edge of the cam cover is 480 (The barrels lean forwards).
From the bottom of the sump to the top of the valve cover is 500 and the motor is 450 wide at its widest point. The factory cradle tubes are 240 apart. The mountings are: one at the rear of the crankcase, one below the crankcase but towards the fromt and one at the base of the barrels.

    I hope this helps!

    Mark

PS. Be careful as two different types of regulator are fitted to these bikes (Because the alternators are different). Also, you'll want the TCI electronic ignition.
