Well I pulled the A/C generator cover off and pulled the stator out and the inside of the stator is covered in a black greasy mess! Is this normal? and should there be any grease around the inside of the stator? Oh for the record checked the brushes and they are fine just don't know about all the greasy black on the inside of the stator.

Could be a slight oil leak from the seal at the rear, clean it out with electrical contact cleaner & an air line, then check it from time to time.

A very slight oil seeping like wizard notes isn't a big deal and is fairly common - but it an be a sign of bad things to come. Definitely keep your eye on it from time to time and if the cover starts filling with oil you'll have some work to do!

Some bikes are designed to let oil onto the stator as a method of keeping it cool - the XJs however are not designed like this (as far as I know).

Also - a stator going south can toast the shrink wrap covering over the coils. Double check that they aren't melting or looking burnt.

I'll echo the opinions expressed. I just yanked the rotor and changed the seal and the problem went away.

I think there is a very slow leak from the back seal and I doubt if the PO had ever pulled the stator cover so it has built up over time. It s not burnt either because when I wiped it down just with a cloth the wrapping looked just fine. A couple questions though, would the build up on the stator restrict the charging of the battery? and how do you pull the rotor because I can't seem to figure out how it comes out?

Not being smart here but you use a rotor removal tool. It's essentially a reverse thread bolt from memory that you thread into the hole at the front. Only trick is you need to clamp the rotor in some way to stop it turning while you're threading the bolt.

The bolt will then bottom out and start forcing the rotor off the shaft.

But this is all from faded memory - perhaps Robert or one of the others can confirm.

    Good luck.

You need either a purpose made rotor puller (about $15 for your bike) or you buy a bolt, M16x I forget the thread. I'll have to get that info for you later. However, it is NOT reverse thread so you should be able to pick up a bolt at the hardware store cheap (like $2). Just let them know you don't know the thread and see if they will let you try them out to find the correct thread. Good luck!
