speedo cable at the wheel

I have been searching around, but not finding exactly what I need. I will post again with pics later under the topic "how not to fix a speedometer" haha.

Anyway, my current problem is that I detached my cable at the speedo to make it stop howling, then when I took the cluster off to put the "new" speedo in(used from salvage yard, more on that later) I noticed that the cable would pull out of the housing.

It's not broken, it pulls all the way out and still has both ends, I fed it back in but am not sure how to re-attach it at the wheel, I imagine it "jumped" out somehow due to the cable spinning freely not attached to the speedo, but I've never messed with that hub controller thing, is there a thread with pics showing how that cable is attached at the wheel?

(Oh, and since I brought up howling speedo, I know it can be cleaned and lubed, I did that twice, then took old speedo completely apart to see what problem was, there's a big crack in the worm gear, plus I couldn't put it back together now if I wanted to, what with all the swedged in stuff.)

The cable at the wheel end should have a threaded collar. Once the inner cable slots into the speedometer drive then slide the collar down and tighten onto the thread.

If the collar is missing from the cable, there should be one both ends, you might be up for a new cable.

Check the speedo drive on the bike, wheel end, maybe the collar is still there screwed on tight.

 

If you're talking about sliding the inner cable back in without having disturbed the outer sheath, simply push it back in and spin the front wheel slowly as you push it back down the last 1/2 inch or so it should engage.

It's simply a square peg in a square hole.

 

Yes, Fitz that's exactly what I mean. I had a feeling that was it, I haven't moved the bike since I noticed cable (the inside part) was detached, the housing and collar and all that are still in place at the bottom.

 

Can the speedo cable still be ordered through a local Yamaha dealer?
The square end of my cable broke off at the wheel end, the sheath is fine but suspect I'll half to purchase the hole cable. I know BikeBandit carries it but not to much room on the credit right now. :?

 

actually you can take the broken pieces to an auto parts store and probably source an inner cable over the counter.

My Norton still has a "pre-1960 General Motors" inner cable I installed when it broke on me on a road trip 20+ years ago.

If not, the inner cable can be got separately.
