Solenoid Location? Need help: Ongoing FJ600 Adventure!

    ARRRRGHHHH! A couple weeks ago I posted about the triumphant success in fixing the 'hard start' problem in my 1985 Yam FJ-600. So close... so close...

    I guess this is the way it is with Antique Japanese Bikes... it was certainly that way when I was into British Bikes, but that was a LONG time ago.

    At any rate:
    The FJ-600 became temperamental to start, once again. Would only start with a fresh-charged all the way battery. Dang!

    And then: While I was spraying the air intake with Hard Start like it was Holy Water... I heard a 'click' from the rear tail light... when I turned the ignition key. What the... heck...

    YES: in the past, some genius had installed an anti-theft system in the tail of the bike (where the tool kit used to be). And get this: they moved the starter solenoid to THAT location, to make it easier to wire into the anti-theft gizmo. WELL - this only adds about 3-feet of wire to the solenoid, both going and coming, so like 6 feet total... and said genius wired it with 16-gauge auto ignition wire!

    And this is the solenoid that kicks the starter - hobbled with a long run of not-big-enough wire. Sheeeesh.

    So please: from pictures, I know it is the right size, standard Yam solenoid. I need to know where it goes. What is the stock location? Clearly, not in the tail section.

    When I know the stock location, I can start back-tracing the aftermarket wires... and snip-remove the offending additions.

    I suspect the correct location is the same as for the 550 Seca, because they're closely related. Anyone have PDF of the shop manual pages that talk about the solenoid for this bike?

    THANK YOU and THANKS AGAIN for all who can help with this. I guess findings like this are the peril of Old Antique Bikes where you Don't Know Their History. 8O

    Can't help you with pics or the exact location, but you want to locate it in a place that allows the cables to be as short as possible.

    There should be a metal tang on the frame around the LHS of the airbox that would hold the solenoid in place (inside a rubber sleeve). If you can find this tang you should be able to work out where it is located.

    If you take off the r/h side panel, and put your hands around the battery box as if the energy from your hands will make the bike start, the solenoid should be where your first and second finger of your laft hand are.

    I can take a photo and upload it later if you want. As Hilsy said, this allows the cables to be as short as possible.

    Markie is right on; it goes into a rubber block with a solenoid-shaped hole in it on the upper left corner of the battery box.

    I lifted this from the 550 Seca cable routing diagrams; it's labeled "starter switch."

    PM me with an email address and I can send you the whole cable routing diagram set for the 550 Seca if it would help.

    About the click you heard, it may be going bad. When mine started to go bad I would hear a click from it, I would loose my cluster, and it would work again if I tapped it with a screw driver. Chacal has it, good luck
