Is there a special tool neede to remove the valve and springs from the head? I tried a c-clamp, and the overhead type, but the springs sit flush in the head and there is nothing to grab. 82 xj650rj

You'll need a valve spring compressor and a collar to get the collets out.
4 years ago I made a collar out of a deepwell socket and used to borrow a valve spring compressor from the autoparts.

Last year I bought a Tusk for $25 and it works good.

I'm waiting on a Lisle valve keeper remover/installer I picked up for $25 to get here. Got a head for an XS11 I want to test it out on.
