I just got a XJ750 Midnight Maxim with 10k miles on it. Bike had been sitting up for quite some time. Starter was bad. Replaced starter and got the dreaded grinding slipping noise. Tried the "seafoam" in the crankcase trick and after a few minutes the starter worked fine. Changed oil (Castrol 5W-40) and filter (twice). Starter worked fine, no slipping no grinding.
Next day, engine cold, starter clutch sounds worse than ever. Any suggestions?

BTW- Thanks for a great forum! Lots of helpful info here.

Try Royal Purple synthetic (sold at O'Rielleys auto parts stores) I use it in mine andit works great. It even shifts easier now.

Pull open the starter clutch and clean/service it. If you sand down the flat spots you can usually get a lot of extra life out of them.
