Fuel leak

    I just purchased a 81 Maxim xj550 and it has a massive fuel leak, it appears to be coming out of the air filter housing. Any ideas on what could cause this? thanks

    Carburators - stuck float valve is causing it. Fuel fills the bowls, overflows into the throats, then flows back into the airbox.

    Quick way to stop it is to tap the carbs with a wooden stick - give them a few medium whacks - should bust it loose and stop the flow.

    Full fix is to pull the carb rack and do a proper cleaning -- search the forum, many many good threads on it

    If you haven't cleaned them yet you should/ will have too. It will make your bike reliable and run better.
    Also please check your rear brake pads for delamination before you go riding you dont want it breaking and locking up the rear wheel on you.
