I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts on how to reduce the amount I have to twist the twist throttle on my '82 XJ1100J.
It's almost impossible to get a full stroke of throttle with one twist. I don't see any way to modify the linkage at the carbs. Can one buy a different twist throttle tube or something?
    Any thoughts or experiences?

Geez- - you really need a full twist to get an 1100 moving??
First, take up any "XS" slack in the cable (pun intended)

After that, you would modify the "quadrant" or part of the throttle shaft where the cable attaches with a part from another bike of a smaller diameter, and have it brazed or welded in place.
Most likely requiring taking the carbs apart completely.

You should maybe try a larger diameter grip for a better feel.

Try a google search for "racing throttle" and "adjustable throttle". I know there are throttles that turn faster, but I don't think they fit our bikes. I know they aren't cheap. You might have to ride in to a shop with a racing division and try some out.

I posted earlier about the difficulty of the roll itself, and a throttle boss was recommended to me. Depending on your style of riding, having that there might make it easier to add that second twist, and for $150 cheaper than a racing throttle!

That's the thing, there's not much room to install a shorter lever on the carb end.
A smaller grip would make twisting the throttle faster, and I've thought about that as I do have large grips...but I have big hands too and I like the grips.
If I could enlarge the grip tube diameter where the throttle cable attaches that'd help...but I don't see how I can unless I can replace it with one from another model or something.

You could try and lock the throttle wide open while you aren't riding it. That may weaken the spring some what.

we used to do this on dirt bikes back in the day, sometimes it worked sometimes it wouldn't
take a look at the throttle tube where the cable winds around, cut a
piece of the red tube that comes on spray cans and see if it fits in the slot if it does epoxy it in, just make sure the cable won't slip off to the side

Hum, That's worth looking into. I've also heard you can sometimes wrap a certain sized zip tie around the tube to increase the diameter...but I haven't tried that yet.

PainterD... I assume you've already tried that? Let me know how it works for yah...

No I haven't tried it (don't need to in my case) but I'm just saying. It just makes sense that when you stretch a spring long enough, it will eventually get weak and lose it's strength. Worth a try and I don't think you'll hurt anything.
Or maybe remove the return spring and stretch it just a little before replacing it. That will surely weaken it.

I figured you were making a joke or something. Holding the throttle wide open "while your riding it" would be pretty dangerous right? Oh, now I see you wrote "while you aren't riding it"...
Additionally, I don't have a problem with the throttle tension..."day7a1" did.
My issue concerns the amount you have to twist the throttle or the distance the throttle must be turned to get to wide open. The one on mine seems excessively long. I'd like it to be less.
    Thanks!

I'll do some fishing later, but I remember reading something on the SV forums about replacing the throttle sleeve witht a different one to acieve the same results....
Theororetically any sleeve for 7/8" bars should work with a little modding...
just need to find one with the ratio you're looking for....

Sounds like the best possibility. I guess I better pull the throttle assembly apart and figure out if something else will fit.

No I didn't mean having the throttle wide open while riding (some just don't have a clue) I said, while it's parked, not running. You silly goose!

Hey, there's nothing wrong with having the throttle wide open while riding!
That's the only way you can outrun the cops :p

I understand now ...one of those days I guess.
Yes, now I get it. You want a throttle that opens faster (less distance) than the stock setup? Yup, there ae shorter "throw" throttles out there. Thet're just a google search away!
