I usually peruse craigslist on a a semi-daily basis looking for motorcycles. Not really in a position to buy anything... I just like 'window shopping' and looking for the off chance to find a real steal. But here in West Michigan I see VERY few bikes for sale. And the ones that do show up must have a gold lining inside the gas tank and diamond studded air filters because everyone is asking waaay too much money. They are countless ads for "WANTED old fixer-upper motorcycle"
What is it like where you live??

Our local internet listings has 2000 bikes on sale... most are over priced (something about spring weather and people wanting to buy a bike)

I have missed on a couple of great deals (Nighthawk 550 for $150 and a xj650 for $100)

we just need to wait, the deals will come.
When the fair weather riders can't get their bikes to start becase they didn't prep it right the last couple of winters, they will try to sale them and the prices will drop. (May evan get them fro free :D )

Mostly newer bikes and I think I could probably count the number of XJ bikes on one hand that I've seen in a long while...

We get both sides of the coin here in ND. Some people charge close to dealership prices, and some ask for much less than they could get. I picked up my XJ550 for $500 in really good condition. The same day my buddy picked up a 78 CB400 Hawk for $80, but it wasn't anywhere near good condition, although it still ran and was enough to work with to make a bobber.

There are hundreds of bikes on craigslist here in central Mn. Alot of Harleys (50%) and alot of good used cruisers and dirt bikes. There always seems to be a few XJs also at various prices, from cheap to ...You gotta be kidding.

mostly here in Calgary you have to morgage a use bike!! every once in a while theres a deal for the mechanicly inclined but if it runs without issue then it's seemingly worth it's weight in gold!! It's so bad this time of year that my friends and I created a new email (grosslyoverpricedmotorcycles@gmail.com) just to get our point across when replying to some of these ads!! just the other day there was an 08 c90 with 10k asking 2k more than a new 2010 of the same model when I asked him if it was a typo or something he replyed that he wasn't going to give it away and he put a new set of pipes on it!! (silly me $800 pipes would clearly make it worth $2000 more than a new one with warranty!!!)

sadly this overpricing means a lot of bikes aren't selling so the change over in craigs list and kijiji are slow and if you have a good bike at a reasonable price people assume there is something wrong with it or its a scam!! there is a guy that was selling his 03 katana he dropped the price down to $3000 and still couldn't sell! and I didn't have the money:^(

out here the bike market sucks. you almost NEVER see a good old cruiser like an xj or a cb pop up, and if you do its usually thrashed beyond repair. Mostly its either 1 or 2 year old harleys or sport bikes that idiots bought at the dealer and realized they way overpaid and can't afford the payments and try to sell it for $200 less than what they paid new 2 years earlier. But mostly we have people trying to sell 20-25 year old dirt bikes for $2000. And because of all the scamming and fake ads and overinflated prices anybody who sells a bike at a reasonable price gets the shaft. it took me almost 3 weeks to sell my old cbr for $750 that was in pretty good shape.

we have the same problem here in australia. some people think they are selling gold bars not used bikes, while others seem to just want to get rid of it. i know of one wrecker in brisbane that wants $1000 for a dead 900 and doesn't even know if it runs. no carbs, no tank, no gauges, and by the look of it was stored out side for the last 50 years. he was not happy when i laughed in his face and told him to stop taking so many drugs

    Tons of deals in Florida,
I just got the title back from Tallahassee for the '84 Venture that I bought for $200 that also had a parts bike, so that deal went thru.

Look thru the Orlando Craigslist and see for yourself.

In the Uk ebay seems to fill the gap between what a dealer will sell second hand and junk.
There are a few XJ 600's for sale at any one time but 550's and 650's are rare. You can pay in the range of 250 - 600 pounds for a bike like mine, dependant on condition.

For what ever reason bikes seem to have higher mileages here than in the States, so prices reflect greater wear.

Overpriced is a relative term. In this economy, a lot more stuff is overpriced because folks don't have the spare change like they did a few years ago. I'm trying to sell a piano right now, and it is just not moving. But I am reluctant to lower my price, because I know how much it is worth in a normal market, and I don't want to take a bath on this deal. I keep hoping the right buyer will come along, but I'm afraid I may have to come down more than I want to.
