Well first off hello all, ya'll have a wonderful forum here. Found almost all the info i needed without to much trouble.

Im a huge metric bobber fan and i have a thing for force induction. So this model bike seems like the bike for me.

Well as the title say, I got a few questions about the XJ650LJ Turbo!

I found this beast in a junkyard all the way down here in florida. Doesn't seem like its in to bad of condition. The fairings and paint are all still there, does not appear to have ever been laided down so thats a plus.

So i asked the guy a lil about the bike. He said it took it for payment on a motoswap he did 2 years ago. It ran well when he parked it and there it has sat ever sense.....

Please keep in mind I am an Auto Mechanic but I don't feel like starting off my first metric build with tearing everything apart 100%, 70% tops Smile

    So my question is...
How after I get the carbs cleaned out and re-installed, how do I synch them?

Do I disconnect the boost hose and tune them while they are pulling vacume?

I know that the carbs are different from the non-turbo carb, but is the tunning methods the same?

Anyhelp would be wonderful, and greatly thanked for!

Also on a side note. I also plan on
    - Replacing ALL fuel line
    - Cleaning the check valve inline with the turbo oil line (causes oil to pool in turbo and smoke as the bike runs)
    - Cleaning fuel system check valve (again causes lean)
    - Cleaning tank
    - Checking cork seal in the gas cap (when cork hard causes leanness)
    - Clean entire turbo (dirty wastegate actuator causes overboost)
    - Check for battery warning light sensor (If present in the batter it may tell me a lil of how it was taken care of before that jerk off)
    - Check compression, spark ect

Once I get her running and bobbed, Im going to totaly upgrade the turbo system for 15psi
    -Mecanical boost controller
    -38mm Wastegate
    -38mm Blow-Off Valve

Thanks for all the info. Look forward to hrs spent on this cool lil bike!

Actually for 14psi of boost all you need to do is put a plug on your wastegate and the nipple coming from the turbo. The plenum box has a built in pop off valve that will pop off at 14 or 15 psi.

I would definitley reaplace all of the fuel line.
THe check valve the best thing for that once you get it clean is to ride it weekly. This is one bike that needs to be ridden or you will wind up with oil in the turbo and a smoker for the first dozen miles. I ride mine daily!!!

Check valve some people have just taken out the guts but I refuse to do it. Just make sure it operates properly and that it's clean of the crud

Always clean a tank if you don't know how long its been sitting, especially on the older bikes. No sense in putting good gas in on top of bad gas.

Clean the turbo?? you can clean the outside of it but be carefull if you take it apart.

Battery warning.. there is a diode that is needed to fix it permanently

check compression.. Do that before you do anything else.

Will add that if you get it running and it stumbles on boost, there is a filter in the fuel pump, make sure that's clean. If your fuel pump runs, you are in good shape, if it doesnt soak it overnight in kerosene, after a day or two apply power to the pump. If it doesnt start you can tap on the pump with a rubber mallet and that might get it started again. BUT BE CAREFUL, MAKE SURE YOU ARE DOING THIS WITH A FIRE EXTINGUISHER WITHIN ARMS REACH!! If you have a good fuel pump and the bike is still stumbling at boost, usually around 6000 on the tach, replace the spark plugs. I go through a set every 5000 to 7000 miles. Its only 12 bucks to replace all 4 plugs and will save lots of frustration down the road.. I did that for several months, spent lots of money on fuel pressure regulators, carbs, fuel pumps only to find out that if I replaced the plugs, this baby would light right up and come alive... how alive.. Well I just replaced the motor with one that had 7000 miles. Put the Girlfriend on the back and when we hit the freeway onramp, I gassed it, in second gear the front wheel came up, I crapped my pants and shut it off for a second then got back on the gas. I was laughing the rest of the way up to Arrowhead to have breakfast.

Great bike if you can get it running. I have rode mine to Denver from So cal in one day and its a great sport tourer, not only that but when you pull her into the local Sunday motorcycle hangout. You get people that want to talk to you

Oh man thanks a ton for the boost level info but I am still unclear. How to go about the carb synching?

Do I disconnect the intake line from the turbo and run the motor n/a? Then test the vac pressures, using the standard methods?

Please if ya'll could clear this up for me that would be terrific!

since it isnt under boost while idling, you should sync the carbs like you normally would. If you are really worried just unplug the line coming from the boost meter and cap it off. I have never synced my carbs, LOL probably should do it but right now its running sooo nice!!!
