    Hey everyone.

Well I took out my newly aquired 1983 xj1100 and found out it hops and skips in second gear. 1st and 3rd seem okay (I didn't try 4th and 5th because I only took it around the neighbourhood - no insurance or plates) but when I give her in 2nd it chunks and skips.

I am assuming I need a new second gear. Now I have an 1984 that I was going to rebuild but as a completely black bike (engine flat black everything else glossy) so I could take the second gear out of there but I would love to rebuild it and see how I like the look (it also has a bad piston).

    So I have two questions.

Does anyone have a second gear to sell me and if so how much?

    and

How do I go about doing this?

Any help will be very much appreciated.

    Thanks a ton....

From what I understand, it's a bent selector fork that moves the gear left and right. If your gear is not destroyed, you don't need a new gear.
I'll be doing this to a Venture I just bought.

If there's not a thread on the repair on this site for you, I'm sure there would be on the XS-11 site.

Read through some of these articles on the XS/XJ1100 trans. Real good tipa and tricks to get your trans working right.

I have done the dremmel fix on each of mine and it has worked great. If you need to replace a gear they can be found on Ebay for a good price. I have even bought a entire engine for 50$ jus to get the gears.

Okay so the week end is over and I have my gear pulled out. It is pretty worn but since it wasn't actually poping out of second (just hoping around) I am assuming it is safe to drumel to fix. I checked out the other dogs and they looked new.

Does anyone know the minimum width for a dog before you should replace the whole gear?

I got the instructions for how to do this at the following url on the XS11 site:

    http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.ph ... eadid=5090

and some updates on this url:

Good luck to all who are trying it. The guy in the article leaves his engine in the bike and flips the bike. I actually took my engine out and borrowed my buddies engine stand and mounted it on there. Just made it easy to move around the engine to get a better angle on some things.

Okay I took a gear out of my now parts bike and but it in the 83 xj1100. I took it out for a test spin and I will say that I love my new smooth riding second gear. It worked like a charm.

Thanks for all the help and advice from everyone. Being new to all this motorcycle mechanic stuff can be a little overwhelming.

Now on to brakes and carberators.

    Thanks again...

I might be able to help, I have an 85 750 and it 'use' to skip out of 2nd gear, and a shop wanted 2000$ to fix it ... i did it for 40$.

it may be where the gears come together ... how to explain ... one gear has ... nipples, and the other has slots, the nipples go in to slots, my problem wasn't the nipples, they were fine, 1 of the 3 slots were shaved a little .. im trying to be serious ... lol ... once I got it out, i had to have it straightened (drilled) so the nipple wouldn't slip out. There might be some pics on my webpage.

Mine was definitely the nipples (known as dogs). But all is good now. I will give it a better test run when I get my brakes working right.

    Thanks for the info...
