Okay a little background. I am looking for a bike as a daily commuter to and from work as I don't like exposing my newer bike to the weather. My first bike was a Heratige Special I purchased new in 82, so I am partial to the styling of the similar XJ1100.

I am going to look at this bike this evening. Current owner states the bike has a charging problem. Are there any specific problem areas that I should be looking at on these bikes?

PS. Asking price is $1k and in the picture the bike looks to be in decent shape for its age.

    Any feedback would be appreciated.

mmm, I dont know if I would buy that bike unless he adjusted the valves when he was supposed to.

also, I'm pretty sure you're supposed to replace the cam chain at 60K miles

but it does look like it was taken care of, see if you can get her for 700 or so

I own and ride a 1980 XS1100 Midnight Special. The forum i belong to gives great help and info on these bikes. The charging system is rock solid on these, but electrical connections are subject to corrosion and bad connections. I doubt if there is a problem with the alternator, but maybe the rectifier, or connections. The pick up coils are problematic with wires breaking inside the insulation. There are multiple fixes for these bikes on XS11.com. This looks like a 1100 Maxim. If this bike runs well, looks good, good tires, clean under the outward appearance, i would pay the price. To bad i don't have the money right now, or i would have it by now.

An addition to what i said. If this bike is running right, it will pull like a freight train, and do the quarter mile in aprox 11.5. This is one of the first super bikes in 1978. They are also made in an FJ model. I would love to have an FJ.
