So my buddy found a smokin deal on an older Suzuki that had been sitting for 20 years. The guy rode it for 22,000 kms (sorry were in Canada!!) then he broke a latch on his clutch line. It should have been a cheap $15 fix and he could have been back on the road but he put it in his garage so now its been sitting there since 1988.

He dident store it properly so the gas tank was rusted all to hell inside. We pulled the carbs and they looked pretty decent. The gas that was left in them had turned into a tar like substance, But with some carb cleaner and some time I thnk we can clean em up. The air filter was a foam filter and when we checked that out it crumbled into pieces!!! I pulled the petcock and it was all gunked up with rust and tar like gas so we might need to replace that. We are gonna try the "bolts on a chain and then coating the tank, and throwing in a fuel filter" method for the tank.

    So we

    - Got new spark plugs
    - Changed the oil and filter
    - Getting a new battery
    - Are cleaning out the carbs
    - Fixing up the tank

Can anyone suggest anything else we should do before trying to turn this thing over?

My skills are limited and come mostly from the advice you guys have given me over the years on what to do with my bike. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreitiated.

    Thanx
    Bugz

Put some oil in the cylinders and turn over by hand??? the walls may be rusty??? Check compression prior to firing?? (compression testers are cheap) Check the valve train to see it it moves freely???

I know it's been a while since you posted but when I see someone is going to coat a tank I always want to tell them not to use Kreem. Use a product called Red Coat. You can find it at radiator shops. About $45 for a kit.

Im sad to report that we just kept finding more and more problems with the bike. He got fed up with the constant problem after problem and ended up selling it to a guy who figured he could get er up and going. About two weeks later the guy pulled into his drive way just to rub it in!!!

    What can ya do hey!!

At least its one more bike saved from the junk heap.

I did that to the PO of my '81, although it was more like 5 months. Had to, to get even for all he put me through.
