Hey there. I have a 1981 XJ650 FRAME with a 1982 XJ650 YICS Engine in my bike. Everything works and fits fine.

I also bought a 1982 XJ650 YICS parts bike, which also fits everything fine.

However, I've got the opportunity to buy a 1982 XJ750... But im wondering how close this bike will be to the 650s I've got. I havent even seen pictures of it but will everything fit? I know Yamaha has basically the same blinkers and stuff but will side covers and tank and engine all mount up no problem? is everything the same except displacement? much difference in the carbs?

Here are the 2 bikes we are comparing...

    1982 XJ750 Maxim Canada: 15T
    1980-81 XJ650 Maxim Canada: 4H8

any help will be appreciated before I go buy another parts bike! thanks!

Take a look in the parts fiche.

I believe the shifter setup is different although the motors are basically the same.

I believe the shifter setup is different only on the Secas. Side covers are different, though not 100% sure on the mount points. The 750 engine will drop right into a 650 frame. You'll need the 750 carbs or at least the jets and needles out of them. Tank should fit, although the 750 tank is bigger.

The front end is different -- bars, instrument cluster, brakes.

A couple of areas of difference to be aware of:

    - shifter covers, internal case arrangement, and pedals are different between the 650 Maxim, 650RJ Seca, 750 Maxim, and 750 Seca models. Each are unique.
    - the oil level sensor is different (750 Seca and '82 750 M). Basically, the "computer dash" models use a different sending unit than the regular analog dash models.
    - no tach drive provision on 750 engines, so an issue when swapping
into a 1980-81 Maxim or Midnight Maxim, or a 1982 650RJ since you will also have to convert to an electric tach.
    - engine upper mounting stay brackets are the same on 650 M/MM and 750 M/MM; 750 Seca are different, as are 650RJ Seca brackets
    - 650 M/MM and 750 M/MM upper engine mtg. bolt is a long, thru-and-thru style. All others are short.
    - front upper, lower, and rear insulators same on 650 M/MM and 750 M/MM,
750 Seca and 650RJ Seca do not use insulators and thus the engine cases are different (they do not have the large holes needed to accept the insulators) and some of the mounting hardware is thus different.

When I put a 750 in my 650 frame, I had to change to an electronic tach, swap the oil sensor, ignition pickup assembly, shifter linkage and change jets in the carbs. The airbox and exhaust collector are different but the 750 seems to run fine with the 650 versions. I think that"s all I did.

    thanks guys!

so it would be wise to buy the 750 for parts then? sounds like everything should line up...

things like side covers, seat, grab bar, etc.

750 side covers and seat will not fit any of the 650 frames without extensive modifications.......
