I've been here lurking for a while and am finally getting around to posting. I've had my 85 XJ 700 Maxim X for about 3 weeks I basically traded 2 small guns for it. I ride it almost daily and am very pleased with the bike. Looking forward to learning more about the XJ's. I do have one question where is the best place to tap in for switched power on the bike? I'm wanting to run some aux. lights but, I only want them to work if the key switch is on.

Welcome to the forum. On the lights, be very careful on the aux lights you choose. The output of the alternator is minimal. One of the other guys that know more about this than I can chime in.
There is a lot knowledge to found here.

The lights I'm adding are very small led's I've been using them since I got the bike I just don't like them not being wired in with the key switch for the power to their switch.

Here she is the day I got her right after I got the bags on. She's been washed (coils did not like that at all was the next day before I could ride her again with no problems), waxed, and polished since then.

After I cleaned her up a little (only washed) and loaded for the first day of riding it to work.

Use the blue wire for the rear tail-light, it comes on as soon as the key is turned to ON or PARK. It starts at the key switch........or you can tap into at the connectors located under the front seat.

    Welcome and nice bike!

Looks like you got your two small guns worth. Way better than me, I only brought an old slingshot made from rubber bands to the trade. Keeps me busy in the garage though.

oh, and I like the bags too
