Until late last night I was the owner of a 1986 XJ700 Maxim X, now I am the proud new owner of a 1982 XJ650J Maxim. I decided to make the switch because performance wasn't that much of a draw for me and low maintenance WAS a draw for me. I was within 6k (hardly a summer's worth of riding) of the valve service and I just didn't want to do it on 20 valves.

Anyway, as is recommended on Hap's page (www.maxim-x.com) I replaced the ignition coils on my XJ700 Maxim-X with DC1-1 Dyna Coils. I didn't really notice a difference, but I hadn't noticed it cutting out in wet weather or anything so I probably wouldn't have. Seems like the original coils on mine were fine, it was more of a preemptive modification.

Today after picking up my 650 I gave it a wash and noticed it wouldn't run for a while afterward. Actually it ran for a couple of seconds, then died before I could get out of the parking lot. I pulled the plugs and noticed I wasn't getting a spark from plug #4; however, I was in bright sun so maybe I just couldn't see it?

So, I have 3 questions regarding what to do next:
    1. Are the 650 ignition coils as notorious as those on the XJ700X?
    2. Can I replace the ones on my 650 with the old ignition coils from my XJ700X which always produced a great spark wet or dry?
    3. Any other ideas what may have caused it to stop running?

Mine does that everytime I give it a good wash. I've only had one instance where it quit on me in the rain and that was a torrential downpour and it died when I stopped for a red light. From what I've gathered so far the only real advantage to the Dyna Coils is they are not 28 years old. I did read a post on here one time about someone coating the old coils in liquid tape or something, to better insulate them. Been meaning to try it myself.

If you search my posts, one of my first ones is a question about coils and someone linked the instructions about the liquid tape in response.
