Was the gas tank on the 83 midnight maxim 750 the same size as the 650?

Nope - pretty sure all the 750 Maxim's got the larger 19 liter tank as opposed to the 550 & 650's 13 liter one.

What is needed to fit the larger tank on a bike originally fitted with the 13 liter tank?

Nothing, The 750 maxim tank will fit on the 650 frame and vise versa. the real difference in the tanks is the width at the shulders of the tank.

The only real difference between them (other than the physical size & volume) is that the 750's tank has the fuel level sensor in it. It still fits, but if you're using it on a 650, you'll just have to either remove the wires for it, or tie them up out of the way.

    Mounting is identical though.
