    Hi,
I have a rear X750P rim which has a fairly severe dent in one side of it. I was thinking that it was going to have to go to the tip because of it so the question...
Is there a way to safely repair one of these rims when it is dented? or is it always a case of 'just toss it' if its dented in any way?

I will add a picture tomorrow when I get a chance to get one in good light but it seems like a shame to have to throw it away if it is salvageable.

It's a shaft driven rear wheel from an XJ750P 1984. Same as the XJ750RK I think but looks like the XJ650Turbo rims with the straight 3 spokes instead of the swirly type 3 spokes, although that isn't something that is important at this point in the exercise!

I'd like to know about repair of 'bend' as well, I have a spare front rim with slight ripple in it.

The XJ750P in the ACT... I already bought the electrics from that bike and being exactly what I need it is tempting but ... I wonder about heating it and giving it a tap... hmm hmm
Very tempting. Working out the right temp with the oxy/acetylene may be a bit difficult. I see cracks appearing or alloy dropping in a pool. Hopefully someone does have a trick to this or I will give it a shot later anyway me thinks.

I really don't think it's worth risking your life over, is it?

    Into the ash can.

I agree with Big on this one, when you take into consideration the amount of time to remove the tire, trying to heat it up without 1: melting the rim, 2: affecting the temper of the material, 3: how true will the rim be after doing 1 & 2, then remounting the tire, balancing the thing and then in the back of your mind every time you ride thinking, "I hope the bloody thing is all right"
Just take all the gubbins out that you can salvage and pick up another from evil bay or a breaker.
Your hide has got to be worth that much at least!
    Ride careful, ride long!

I dont know about motorcycle rims ,but dented alloy car rims are regularly repaired.I have had 2 done on my daughter,s MX 5 ( Mazda Miata to you chaps in USA ) Dont attempt it yourself tho,its a specialised job that requires careful heating and rolling on a special jig ,little by little, in very small increments. If you find some who repairs the car ones , they will be able to advise you.........Cheers,Murray
