    Hi There,

I recently bought a 1983 Maxim 400 with 6800 km on it. The body is in great shape aside from the side panels breaking off when they were removed but at least I still have them which from looking around and reading seems to be rare so I'm thankful for that. I'll have to look at some options to repair them. Each panel has 2 plugs that hold it on to the bike. Each of my panels has one of those plugs broken off although I still have the plug as well. I just need a decent adhesive I guess but I worry about them coming off at 100 km/h.

The engine ran well when I drove it. Took it to a bike shop and had it looked over. I have very little mechanical ability but I'm looking forward to learning. Had oil change, filter done, clutch oil changed, brake fluid changed, new air filter, new tires. Brakes inspected, no problems. My clutch lever was bent a bit so the guy straightened it. I've got one on order. There doesn't appear to be any leaks from the engine so that's a positive, I took it out today for a 60 km jaunt so I'll know more tomorrow when I check the floor.

It's a "1984" however the date code is 4/83. I'm going to be moving the brake lever down a bit so I'm not pushing on it while my foot is on the peg. Also looking at some gel grips as my hands go numb after 30 minutes or so from the vibrations unless I keep them moving. The other issue is some of the rubber accents and clutch and brake boots etc are showing some aging and cracking so I need to update those.

Me I'm 30 and brand new to motorcycles. I've done 2 safety courses last summer so I'm looking forward to riding more this year. Already tenatively scheduled a trip down to Baltimore for a Jays game with lots of breaks while riding if the bike seems ready to hold up and I get it touched up a bit here and there.

Sorry for the long long intro. Also if anyone has any advice for me as a rider or advice or tips for my bike please feel free to PM me.

    Thanks,

    Mike

Thanks for the welcome. Yes I realized after I had left my computer that he had told me the same thing when I had it looked at. News to me. I have a lot of learning and reading to do. I'll go update my location now.

    Mike

Edit: Of course I could add it here as well, Kemptville, ON. Near Ottawa.
