82 XJ550 Maxim wont start, starter wont crank?

    I have an 82 XJ550 Maxim and the starter would crank but it wouldnt turn over. so i changed the spark plugs because they were black which i figured was caused by the old nasty air filter that the PO had in it. Now the starter doesnt crank at all. Maybe i tried it too much? Im going to check the connections to see if everything is in working order but if that doesnt work im thinking about dissassembling the starter and checking it out. Any suggestions??????

    i took "turn over" to mean that it wasn't firing.

    i've heard that you can hit a bad starter with a hammer and get a few more starts out of it. whack at your own risk.

    does the solenoid go "click" when you hit the start button?

    @ fraps the starter used to crank but now it doesn't do anything
