I just checked my valve clearance and came up with the below. There was nothing on the cover to tell me exactly what this bike considers correct and I keep finding conflicting information.

    Exhaust
    #1: .008in / .203mm shim 270

    #2: .009in / .229mm shim 270

    #3: .009in / .229mm shim 270

    #4: .007in / .178mm shim 280

    Intake
    #1: .006in / .152mm shim 260

    #2: .007in / .178mm shim 280

    #3: .006in / .152mm shim 290

    #4: .006in / .152mm shim 280

If I go with what I read in an earlier post & if I interpreted the chart correctly, I need 275 shims on exhaust 2 & 3 and 285 on intake 2.

    But I'm guessing...

    Idears?

    Thanks

There's a chart in the service manual for my XJ900 that calculates the replacement shim. If you have the service manual for your bike, that'll do the same.

I have a handful of shims from the 900, wondering if they'd be the same for your bike. Most are 285's. Do you want me to send you a couple? No charge for a fellow CT boy.. Well, I'm formerly from there, anyway. But here to help. PM me your addy if you're interested, I'll bang em out to ya tomorrow.

I also have one (1) 275, wish I had more. You're welcome to that too. I actually have a 290 and a 280 as well. Let me know what you need.

    Most kind!

I really don't know if the sizes I came up with actually are the sizes I need. I checked with the local bike shop and the parts guy had never seen one this size...

I really do need to know if my cypherin' was correct before I do anything.

    This is fun!

The chart eliminates guessing, and the very same chart includes the specs which are the same for all the "airhead" bikes. 0.11-0.15mm intake, 0.16-0.20mm exhaust. Ya done good.

Chacal failed to mention that HE carries the shims, nice spiffy new aftermarket ones at half of what Yamamama want$ for them...

WHOA! Just saw your sig as I posted my response.

    I still have my right-shift Norton. Take a look: http://s437.photobucket.com/albums/qq93 ... 52/Norton/

My first bike was a '66 Honda 160 Sport! at around the same time...

Welcome back, fellow old fart. Some of us never gave it up...

My first bike was a right shift BSA. It was a bit weird switching to the other side.

The bikes feel so different it's never been a problem for me.

The problem was my poor 500 Triumph, after I first got the Norton. Both right shift, both British bikes, but the Norton shifts BACKWARDS (down for upshift.) I don't know how many times the poor old 500 got slammed back into a lower gear in place of an upshift...

Fitz, that is a piece of perfect beauty.

To me, Nortons were the absolute most perfect bike ever made. OK, maybe the Vincent was in there too but I never was on one of those. I so miss my Norton but reality is I can no longer right shift a bike. I'm truly most happy with the XJ650 which shifts like butter but I'll never get over the low end torque of that Norton.

    Nope, never...

    Yours is a beauty!
