My first question is in regards to posting questions about my FJ. Should my posts go under "other motorcycles" or is this catagory good?

Problem I am having right now is with gauge lights, head light and turn signals. I have power to the connections but when a load is applied ie... plug in head light or gauge lights or turn on a signal, they don't work and I lose the reading on the meter. Looking at the wiring diagram, the head light does not share the same power source as the turn signals do, (confirmed this at the fuse block) making it that much harder to trace. I've also been checking all the grounds I can find without any luck.

Power that does work: Starts, runs and drives. Neutral light. Oil light. Tach. Both brake lights and tail light.

    Any feedback helpful...Thanks

I had avery similar problem and it was the fuse box, I went over time after time until I changed for single fuse units, 4 of them. End of my troubles.

Thanks Igor, P.O. changed them out but not the best job, I'll take a closer look.

Try this link to a different diagram - you will want "XJ600" but not the '89-91 as theses have a different alternator/regulator"

It sounds like a ground fault but I would run a wire from a known good 12v to your meter lights and see if they work. That way you can test the ground.

It could be bad connectors - visually check if they look green and corroded - if so, give them a clean.

I always put my XJ600 questions here in "Chat"

Issue still unresolved. Not sure if I'm chasing one problem or two ie...headlight/gauge lights seperate from turn signal issue. This bike has a 41r-71 relay that control multiple functions from safety relays to flashers and auto cancel. Anybody have experience with this do it all gizmo?

Relay refered to above has 9 pins on it and the bike will not turn over when unplugged. Headlight is working right now but not sure what I did for it to come on, so I'm not convinced issue is resolved there and signals still a no go. Headlight stays on when 41r-71 relay is unplugged so I'm starting to think the 2 issues are seperate. Headlight does turn off when I hit the starter switch and comes back on when released but after searching high and low for a relay for it I'm not finding it. Is it possible the diode pack is performing that function?

You realy need to follow the wiring diagram - are the meter lights on now? They should switch on with the lighting switch in the 1st position.

The tail light goes through another pair of contacts on the ignition switch (Designed for "Parking" lights) and the "Pass" switch doesnt use the lighting switch.

Which diagram is the right one for your bike?

Thanks Markie. I've been using a diagram specific to a 1984 FJ600 from the start and appears to be the same as the XJ600L. Yes, the meter lights started working when the headlight decided to start working.

Looking at the diagram, the headlight should go off - presumably to give maximum starting current/voltage when you press the button.

The diagram calls the 9 pin relay "Relay assembley" and operates the auto off for the indicators and the sidestand safety cut out - the clutch switch is fed into it. It looks like this relay controls the flashing itself so could be the problem. Power goes to this relay on the brown wire.

Decided to take a chance and assume the 9 pin relay is bad and not wanting to spend a small fortune replacing it, I bought the unit others have used on this forum. I cut out the 9 pin, eliminated kick stand and related switches, powered up new relay and hooked up signal wires. Everything is working now although I still can't explain headlight issue, it's working now so I'll be cautiously optimistic.

Markie-do you think the r/w that came out of the old 9 pin relay that goes to the starter relay should be hooked up to power or grounded. I think it needs to have power but would like your opinion...thanks
