I hope it's not the carbs, but it's looking that way

    So my '83 XJ650 is having probs starting.

    After new plugs and a battery charge she still won't catch, then mysteriously a couple of hours later she roars to life.

    I was at my wits end and so sprayed some WD40 into the airbox, she grudgingly spluttered and finally caught.

    What would be your diagnosis doctors?

    From my research its a fuel issue related to the choke and the jets in the carbs?

    I'm guessing the key tools will be carb cleaner and something super thin to clean out those jets, I have a Haynes manual, and the immortal words of Rick O Matic to help me as I go.

    I have noticed with mine lately that I have to set the petcock on pri for a minute or two in the morning. I think that it is because I don't let it idle for a few before shutting it down, and it's not letting the carb level come up. I suspect that my tank vent is loosing its effectiveness. If I don't use pri, I can crank it till I'm blue in thew face, then walk away, then in about 20 minutes it will start right up. Note this is usually only in the morning when the bike is cold.

    WD40 is the God of all sprays. It does everything. When used a starting fluid, it won' t hurt the engine like traditional sprays. And it is good for rubber. Its a win win really.
