Im new to this forum, hopefully u guys can help me. Sorry this i so long, trying to describe the problem as best as i can. I just got my first bike, i traded some car parts for it. Its an 82 650 maxim, with 12k miles, the previous owner traded for it 15 years ago,and didnt know much about the bike, but he said it kept popping fuses, it hasnt been driven since 95. So i got it home, i found that the ignition module was missing, so i got a used one off ebay, turns out it was off an 81 and i noticed the lower left terminal was different compared to my harness plug, so i tried it anyway. I put gas in the tank, hooked up jumper cables and it fired right up, it idled perfect and was really responsive. I was expecting the carbs to be bad from sitting, but it ran good, i took the jumper cables off and it fried the module, so i got an 82 module put it on and drove the bike a couple miles. A couple days later, the bike had trouble wanting to start and idle. I figured my luck ran out on the carbs, as i was holding the throttle to keep it running, it changed pitch, sounded different and after a while i saw smoke by the fuse area and then the bike died. Then it didnt want to do anything, it lost power to everything, so i unplugged the module, then the bike would turn over fine and i had everything back, but it burnt the headlight and tailight bulbs. So i got another module, my dad said to check voltage this time and it was around 16 volts, so i figured the rectifier was bad, i changed it and it took care of the problem, no more surging. So just when i thought i had it fixed i took it for a ride and it died again, it popped the igniton fuse and i lost power again, uplugged the module and it turns over again. Any ideas why it keeps taking the modules out, its getting expensive. Thanks for any info

You are frying parts and wires because of corrosion in your electrical harness. The alternator is outputting too much voltage because even though your system is actually needs about 14volts, because of the corrossion (resistance drop) the systems reads less than than and increases output to compensate. That is why your at 16volts.

First thing you NEED to do is replace the fuse panel. Put in some automotive fuses (AT fuses I think they are called). Once that is done, check out this link, pay close attention to the charging system write up.
