I have a XJ 1100 and need to have the valves adjusted. I live in Central Connecticut and I am looking for someone that will do the job right with knowledge of these bikes. It would be nice if I could also get the floats adjusted properly as I seem to have trouble with getting them correct.

Does anyone know someone with the skills and tools that could help me out for a reasonable price?

    Thanks

Not exactly close to you but Ben, the owner of Motoconsult in Mansfield is really knowledgable about most bikes. You can get better prices but he does go the extra bit to make everything worthwhile.

    Thanks
I was kind of hoping that someone with the skills could do it in there garage for a few hundred bucks. Yeah I know wishful thinking but you never know.

Not much of help, if You´ve got your mind set - guess You have your reasons for wanting someone to do it - but:

If the Xj1100 (which is really an "XS" engine") is remotely similar to the later Xj-airheads, valve-checking and shim-swapping is not a hard task - provided you have the feeler-gauges and the valve-shim tool.

2 things of caution adding to the various great write-ups:

    - with the shim-tool installed, pressing the bucket down: Be VERY careful turning the camshaft in the right direction (cams away from the tool).

    - when a shim has been changed, make sure its correctly and fully seated in the bucket; I use my small non-magnetic screwdriver to pry gently between the shim and and the cam.

i am a mechanic, but i just DO NOT have any time to take on any more jobs, at least for the summer. i would strongly suggest getting a manual and with the help of this forum you attack it yourself. at the very least you could check them yourself without causing any harm, and you could see if the valves are in need of adjustment.

i have a MC mechanic friend who does side work, i will ask him permission before PM'ing you his number. he lives in guilford.
