Hi folks new guy here. Thanks for this forum.

I have a 1985 XJ 700 Maxim. Bought it last fall and it is my first motorcycle. The odometer this spring was almost 40k, then one day it was suddenly at 36k! I have reset the mileage meter a couple times, but pretty sure NOT between the time I knew it was at 40k and when I noticed (pretty much the next day) it was at 36k. Not that the two are related anyway.

Does anyone have a clue as to what might have happened? Thanks much!

I think what you actually bought was a time machine.

I would think that seeing as it is a mechanically driven counter, that possibly when it reached the magic 40k it skipped the gear and fell back to 36k......or you could have a time machine!

It couldn't go backwards, but the "thousands" wheel could have stuck and gone for a ride past 0 and back around, deciding to unstick at 6. Did the 3 ever roll to a 4? You said you were close to 40K.
