Is adding gas treatment to the tank a good idea, a bad idea or a waste of money? I occassionally add an ounce or two of 'gas treatment' to my gas tank with hopes that I'm cleaning the carbs, fighting deposit buildup, removing water, etc.

I've used products like STP carburetor treatment, Super Tech gas treatment and Iso-Heet. The stuff is inexpensive at a buck or $2 per bottle, so I don't mind the waste of $...but I will stop if it's somehow harmful to the engine, gaskets, seals, etc.

I've used the stuff for years in cars, with carbs and fuel injectors, and with appearantly good results, but I'm relatively new to bikes. Also, my carbs were disassembled and cleaned by a reputable bike shop last summer and I'd like to think I'm helping to keep them clean. Thanks.

I put seafoam in mine every couple tanks. Partly as a cleaner partly as a stablizer. Sometimes it's weeks between times I get to the bike for a ride.

I run cleaner alot thru my bike "Sea-Foam",STP ete. runs like a champ. Has never damaged anything I can see;; and I go over and check my bike ALL the time. Just my opinion. Hope that helps. p.s. follow mgf. instructions on mix ratios as close as can.

For the most part, additives are just for peace of mind - they don't do much. Even most of the "cleaners" don't work that well -- with the exception of SeaFoam - that stuff has been proven to work well in our bikes as both a cleaner and fuel preserver.

The only other thing I use is some 'gas line antifreeze' in the spring -- as I store the bike over the winter with the fuel tank full, I add some of that to help remove any water from condensation.

seafoam is pretty legit, but ive been told by several people that if your tank has rust in it theres a chance the seafoam will knock it free and itll get into your carbs. but i imagine if you have an inline fuel filter that shouldnt be a problem?

unless your tank was sitting without fuel for a long time... I don't see how it could have rust in it.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

That being said, using fuel treatments shouldn't kill your engine, as long as you follow the manufacturer's instructions. It just might not be worth the money. I don't see the need for using more than 1 bottle of seafoam per riding season (~ 1/2 bottle conditions 1 full tank, so once at beginning, once at end of season). Like the others, I've heard good things about seafoam, and I've started using it myself.
