So I really like my bike, but I REALLY hate the speedometer. Not the gauges, just the face of the speedometer. It's the way the speedometer goes from 55 to 60 but everything above 60mph is in RED and in intervals of 10mph as to say "DANGER DANGER DANGER!"

Does anyone know of replacement inserts for the speedometer on an 83 XJ650 Maxim??

I dont know of any off the top of my head, but I know gauge faces are EASY to make... All you need is photoshop skills and some light plastic type stuff to run thru your printer.

I did some for my Ford Escort when I had it, but I used paper. Been thinking of doing my Maxim.

That would be a really good thing to do a write-up on, too.

I may hop on mine, since I need to do fork seals before I go ride again.. In which case, I would do a walk through on it too.

Ill go pull my gauges and take a look.

Webslinger does custom speedos for a buncha bikes,
    http://www.stargis.net/webslinger/Image ... /index.htm

tho, i do not know if they do any XJ, or XS bikes. last i checked tho, you can send him your speedo, and he will do it for you, and add it to his list of supported bikes,

might be worth the email, and its not a bad price

EDIT - from the site -

"LOOKING FOR DONORS: If you don't see your motorcycle make or model listed here, it doesn't mean the speedometer can't be made. It just means that we don't have a speedometer to use as a template yet. In many cases a customer will take their speedo and send it to us and we can then make a speedo face using their stock dial as a template. That initial donor will receive their speedo face at no charge. E-mail us with questions."

UPDATE: Got the gauges apart, cant get the needle off. You might just try taking your speedo out and using flat black model paint and a fine tipped brush to take out the red...

Im going to keep trying on this. Will give another update as soon as I can.

Okay, so I looked at my gauges and they are white in the area from 60mph and above, but nonetheless, the matter is the same.

Jeff, if you figure out how to get that done, I would love to see a walkthrough. I can't remember if the insert is lit from underneath or from the bottom of the gauge. If it is from the underneath I would like to see how you get it to work at night.

Gave up for fear of breaking something. If I had a spare stock gauge laying around, I would give it hell and see if I could make headway, but I dont want to break the only speedo I have.

I spoke with Webslinger last night, and Zyggy... Just send your gauges to the man.

PM me and Ill give you his info. I was going to send mine and be the first set but you were the one looking for it, and I dont want to be without my instruments for two weeks.

His turn around time is 3-5 business days, after you get it to him, so if your broke like me, its 3-5 for shipping, 3-5 for gauge work, 3-5 for shipping home. Thats between 9-15 days + weekends. I cant be without my gauges that long during riding season!
