So my speedometer has started making a strange whirring sound as the km's increase, its slows and stops when the bike does.

It's getting worse and worse, I can feel violent vibrations when i put my hand on it at speed.

I'm about to take it apart but thought I'd see if anybody had had similar probs and could let me know what it might be.

    cheers

Relieve any kinking in the Cable.

    Remove, Clean and Lube Cable.
    Oil the Cable Sheath.

Put a smear of White Lithium Grease into the Bottom of the Instrument ... Surrounding the Nylon Drive Bush that the Cable fits into.

Check to see that the Instrument Panels Fasteners are TIGHT and the Instruments aren't loose.

Mine made wild noises too when that happend on myn xj750j. I removed the speedo from the gauge clust and it was binding up inside, had to lude and work it free till it spun smoothly, are you getting any wild squalling noises too?

Since you didn't give us a clue as to which bike you have, the advice is going to be rather generic.

I had a tach pack up and scream so loud people out mowing their lawns were stopping to look as we went by...

here's what's in there. Depending on the bike, access may be easy or require surgery. have fun: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15303.html

    Cheers for the replies guys.

    Its an '83 XJ650 Seca.

Yeah its definitely noisy, i'm thinking that taking it all apart and lubing should sort it out.

Are there any pitfalls I should be aware of when taking it apart.

I read in the workshop manual that releasing the bolts that hold the speedo body to the bracket can only be tightened from inside? Is this likely to be an issue?

    cheers

sounds like what my speedo did. Couldnt lube it untill I litterally dismantled the cluster, took the speedo out of the cluster and oiled it from the inside and spun the little wheel till it spun freely. It bound up to the point it snapped my speedo cable too

Definately dismantle and lube inside, on mine the bush wore out that bad the wheel inside was rubbing on metal with shavings every where, had to remove it so the odometer would keep going. Still haven't replaced it yet... mmmm must do that one day.
