So I got the starter motor off, there was a fair bit of carbon dust in there.

So whatta you reckon? Do i need new brushes? I don't have a clue, never touched a stater motor before in my life.

I pulled them because she is very reluctant to start up of a morning.

They look like they are down to the limit, there is a wear line on there, if you can't see it you must be past it,

Thanks Wizard, but i'm far from past it, I think the problem is i'm too fresh to know what i'm looking for.

Hey you're a fellow Aussie. Where do you source your parts from? Would you recommend new brushes?

To re-iterate what Wiz said..if you can't see th wear line on th brushes (like a scribed line across th entire brush) they are past it ..that is replace with new ones.

he's got LOTSA brush there. and he said he's FAR from past the wear line.

    battery not fully charged.

    charging system not working properly.
check the battery voltage and check the charging system. should start at battery voltage and climb it's way to around 14 volts as you slowly rev the throttle.

    corrosion on the battery cables.

starter solenoid. take a screwdriver and touch the two battery terminals together on the solenoid. if the motor cranks over better. then you've got a corroded solenoid.

those are what you want to look at.

the starter motor looks just fine.

right now they are bottomed out. put the plate back over the end and look at the copper wire comin out the side. with the plate installed the distance from the copper wire to the brush holder is what you have left. I ad mine replaced at a start and alternator repair shop for $15.
