New to the site :)

    Hey all I'm new to the site andtrying to get a feel for the forum. So far it looks like there is a ton of good information concerning the XJ bikes and im sure I will be frequenting the site to find out information and learn more about these bikes.
    I recently just purchased a 1983 XJ750 Maxim that was converted into a bobber, its not in that bad of shape but could definatly use a little TLC. Let me know what you guys think and if anybody is willing to help me iron out some small kinks with the bike it would be greatly appreciated :)
    As of this morning the bike started and ran and seemed to have no issues other than maybe needing a slight adjustment to the carbs (was running quite lean), however this afternoon while cleaning the garage the bike tipped into the wall which casued the throttle cable to snap, so unfortunatly I will be replacing that when the new one arrives.
    The one question I do have is not noticing that the small plastic piece on the throttle cable had broke I went to start the bike, however when I started it the RPM jumped sky-high like the carbs were at WOT. Im guessiing this is due to the fact the cable had no tension, and im sure this is a "noobie" questions but I just wanted to be sure...

    With the broken throttle cable would this be normal for the carbs to be wide open?

    Welcome.

    My first reaction is that a broken throttle cable would cause it to idle. Thinking more about it though if it got yanked open and snapped the fraying would probably hold it open.

    Also, I doubt the actual cable is broken (they're pretty strong). Hard to know without pictures but I bet you broke the sheath up near the hand grip and it's probably pulling the inner cable tight.

    I need to say something here--- is this your first motorcycle?

    If so, please be VERY careful; the combination of the XJ750's power and NO rear suspension are going to make that bike a bit of a handful even for an experienced rider.

    A hardtail is not the same as riding a motorcycle with actual suspension.

    Hey guys thanks for the quick responses :) yes the plastic sheath by the bars is what snapped... I have a new cable on order and it should be here early this coming week. This is not my first bike however it is my first rigid.

    you only paid 600 doll hairs? damn, good buy man. i'm glad your bike is running rich with pods and open headers... you might as well pull off the carbs since you have pods, it wont be hard, and go through them... maybe tell us the jet sizes and such...

    yeah ill see what i can do about checking those jet sizes for you guys, prolly wont get a chance till mid next week though. And picked the bike up for $500 cash :) with a clean/clear title to top it off :p

    Kleen Strip Paint Remover, once most all of the Rhino is scraped free, follow with Formby's Furniture Refinisher and medim to coarse steel wool.

    Awesome deal there, check the weld quality and for cracks on the hard tail.
    Check the rear brake shoes before you ride (see my sig \/ )

    I appologize schooter, I didnt realise my typo, the bike is not running rich its running very lean. Im definatly not the best multi-tasker and sorry for the confusion, I will be jumping into rejetting here soon and will let you know if I find a setup that work well for myself though :)
