I have a 85 XJ750 J and when i turn the handle bars right it revs up and when i turn the handle bars left it dies? I believe its pulling on the throttle cable. Does anyone have a picture of how the cable is routed and tied down?

I have run into this with my bike but I don't know how your bike is compared to mine (82 XJ650 Maxim).

To resolve this on my bike I found I needed to change the angle the accelerator "pipe/tube" faces when exiting below the throttle grip. There's a threaded section with a bolt at the end of this piece and the cable attaches into this tube. The tube is fixed in place by a rectangular tab which is tightened by a single screw.

If you have this a similar arrangement, play around with that pipe, turn it and see if you can find the spot that works best. In my case the pipe is almost parallel with the handlebar, facing a small bit towards the front of the bike.

I'm guessing this'll fix ya. I couldn't see anywhere else it was binding and the cable was well lubed. Works perfect in all ways now.

    Cheers.

Ill try to run it more parallel with the handle bars i believe mine is pointing more towards the motor. As well is the cable running through the frame or on the out side of the frame?

it is your trottle cable...i had the same exact thing happen yesterday. the previous night i had the tank off and had moved the wiring harness and the throttle cable around to get to my fan connector. when i put everything back together i put my throttle cable above the radiator filler neck. it looked fine but on my way to work if i turned all the way to the right my throttle cable would pull and run my bike up to 4k rpms.
i repositioned the cable below the filler and all was good.

Thanks for the pictures but i have watched the throttle cable as well as the choke cable and neither of them move. So i don't know im going down to the garage tomorrow with a handle full of zip ties to tighten it down. I think because i have the front fairing moving with the handle bars that the throttle cable is getting pushed around. So i just got to keep working with it. The joys of a custom.

Ok so after taking off the gas tank a million times spilling gas everywhere. As well as cutting off about 200 zip ties and pulling what hair i have left out. I figured out the problem. I took the carbs off to look at how i could put a spring on and noticed that the idle mix screw was not turned in far enough so the throttle cable was not resting on it so it was just floating in the air and when i turned right it pulled and it reved up. So i turned it in and she works great now all that is left is finishing off the lights, exhaust and intake. So thanks for your help and i hope this helps any one else with this problem.
