So I'm doing some regular oil change maintenance on the rear differential, not sure if it had ever been changed.

And the magnetic drain plug did it's job, I found some gear chunks 8O on the plug.

It still sounds OK, and appears to work, for now.

So my question is, rebuilt it? Replace it? Or buy one and rebuild it.

My daughter rides the bike, 83 XJ750 SECA, and is real easy on it so I'm not in panic mode.... yet.

How big are the chunks?...little bits like ground pepper, or something that won't fit through the drain hole?. :(

Either way, I'd park the bike and be looking for a good used one. Any 650/750 Seca or Maxim will be a bolt-on.These rear ends are bulletproof as long as the lube gets changed and they aren't overfilled.

Rebuilding one of these requires a fair amount of skill, time, and several special tools.

    Let's define the terms:

    Dust-like material; fuzz?
    Shavings?
    Particulate?
    Flakes?

    Chunks?

If they're bone-fide "Chunks" -- I'd "Black Flag" the bike and keep it in Pits until the Pit Crew determined what's up.

If the Magnet looked like a "Cha-Cha-Cha ... Chia" Pet. That's normal and why there's a magnet on the Drain Plug.

Thanks for the info. I've found one on flea-bay, think I'll bid on it.
