Well I've bitten the bullet, taken me skirt off, put my pants back on and pulled the carbs. In the end they came off pretty easily and I'm working my way through Rick's old school carb cleaning.

Overall they're pretty clean inside, this is not the first time they've been apart, but the clunk test fails big time so this looks where most of my work will be.

My question is a couple of the main jets have had the brass slot damaged by an overzealous PO. The hole is clean and not damaged just the wings of the screw slot and I will be able to get enough hold to screw them in. Will these need to be replace or are they OK?

Oh and I haven't separated the carbs yet, just waiting for the testosterone pills to kick in!

You might dress up the slot on the jets with a small file, as long as the PO didn't use a drill to clean the holes out they'll be fine. Just remember they are brass (SOFT) and don't require gorilla power to install.

Don't be scared of the carb separation. Do it right the first time. Take pics or make drawings. Really though, these are pretty simple to disassemble/reassemble. Just take your time and be meticulous about what goes where and cleanliness.
