hello, I stumbled into your forum from the WWW i just inherited my moms 85 XJ700N, its "barn not-so-fresh" since it was stored with gas in it over 5 years ago and left to sit...what a shame, but after some cursing, some wrenching and some luck she sprang to life....my own ride is a 2001 HD electra-glide but im not a cycle snob, my first "big" bike was a 82 seca 650, (non-turbo), and ive been through a few, anyway im here to nose around and get some ideas, i dunno what im gonna do with this cool little bike, it goes pretty good and she seems to be happy to be alive again. thanks for the nice forum. Chilidog!!!

Hi Chilidog and welcome to the forum.

Apart from wrenching you seem to know a little about polishing. That´s a very nice looking "barn-bike" :).

What I like most about my Maxim is it´s smoothness and ability to accelerate (especially above 5000 rpms) - quite different from a HD, I can imagine (never ridden one).

A bit longer, a bit lower seat and a bit bigger engine (900-1300) and everything would be perfect, IMO

Anyone know if the wheels from this bike would fit on an 82 XJ650 Maxim?

Beardking: If you post your query in the techinical section you will get a better response and not get scolded for hijacking the thread! :)

Most of the XJ bikes share the same tires, but some of the maxim's had a little thicker and shorter rear tire when compared to th4e secas, but the front were similar widths.

Now, as far as wheels, bearings, spacers, front/rear disc/drum brakes, that is beyond me as I am a seca pilot. I would suggest buying the XJ CD (link to it on this site) as it has a parts cross reference interface that is apparently great.

chilidog, yes, the 82 has the "cool" directionaly ones. Of course, in this case, cool is totally up to personal preference. I like the straight 5 spoke wheels shown above. I'd rather get some nice looking ol' school wire spoke rims, but I don't know where I can do that with the shaft drive.

Spinalator, thanks for the suggestion. The only reason I asked in this thread was because this is the only place I've seen those rims.

FWIW ive got stock mags on my HD as well and wouldnt trade em for spokes any day, I carry a 12v compressor and plugs, with a spoke rim you have to deal with a tube....

I remember seeing a picture of a 650 Seca with a Maxim X engine and the 5 spoke rims. It was called a Seca-X in the picture caption. It was a nice swap.

Some Viragos came with wire wheels as well, which would probably work.

You might have a bit of a search to find the Virago wire wheels, since I think they were only offered for a very few years on a slightly cheaper spec version of the 750 and possibly the 1000/1100.

Yeah, I found a set of front and rear ones on ebay last night, but with the shipping and the price of the wheels together, they are almost as much as I paid for the whole bike. Don't think I can get that cleared with the little lady just yet. :D
